remember how i said there was lightening?
*UPDATE*
From the BBC website:
"Moments after the last survivor clambered away, the fuselage was engulfed in smoke and flames...Transport minister Jean Lapierre made it clear how close those on board came to death. "I would say this is a miracle," he said. "It's nothing short of a miracle." "
I think that that does a disservice to the flight crew who assisted nearly 300 people in getting off the plane just before it went on fire. All this talk of miracles where people deserve credit not some higher power.

"a spokesperson with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority said lightning was causing technical problems with the airport's lightning-detection system."--ummmmmm....what...? i have a lightning detection system too...i call it "my eyes".
and you gotta worry if you're lightening detection system malfunctions where there's lightening. Or maybe that's how they know?
anyway I'm watching CBC, and a passenger from the back was on the line who reckons it didn't break up, and also the pilot had been taken to hospital, so that's encouraging.
re: the update - DAMN STRAIGHT. miracles, pah! - like Jesus beamed down from the Heaven and activated the emergency slides his own self...
Yeah that's a little short sighted of the Transport Minister of all people. It'd be more forgivable coming from CNN coverage or something!
Anyway I just read a few pagest in the Star today that gives the crew their dues. And also some worker who was driving nearby on airport property and legged it over to help everyone up out of the ravine once they'd whooshed down the emergency chute. Old people and children mostly. And then went in with another guy to do a sweep of the plane to make sure there was no one on it. Good man, stupid, but good.
